Training with The Gesell Institute of Child Development prepares early childhood professionals to understand and better meet the unique needs and abilities of young children through a comprehensive training in:

  • the ages and stages of child development, and
  • how to administer and interpret the results of the Gesell Developmental Observation-Revised (GDO-R)

The GDO-R has been recently validated and updated with new strand scoring and performance levels. It also contains new material making each administration more efficient and user-friendly.  The in-depth training is offered at sites across the nation for new and experienced users alike.

Three types of workshops are available:·

The Gesell Developmental Observation-Revised for the 2 ½-6-Year-Old Child

In this 3-day workshop, participants learn to administer the Gesell Developmental Observation-Revised (GDO-R) to the 2 ½ to 6 year old child and interpret results as they relate to neuro-motor, language, cognitive, social, emotional and adaptive responses.

The workshop will utilize two content areas to assist teachers in determining the unique needs and abilities of young children:

  • a comprehensive presentation of the ages and stages of child development for ages 2 ½ to 6
  • training on how to administer and interpret results of the Gesell Developmental Observation – Revised (GDO-R)

Participants will learn how to use the GDO-R to discern developmental age across a variety of domains and plan appropriately challenging preschool and kindergarten curricula.

A typical workshop day runs from 8:30 AM – 4:00 PM.  Highlights of the first day include a comprehensive overview of developmental age and its implications for learning; an in-depth look at developmental behaviors of the 2-½ to 6-year-old child; and a live demonstration of the GDO-R.  Day two includes additional hands-on practice through role-play; training on tasks/strands, and a second live demonstration.  Day three focuses on scoring and interpretation of developmental age, strand scoring and performance level ratings and a third live demonstration of the GDO-R with a child.

The fee for this course is $549.

Please visit the Workshop Schedule for dates.

Secure online registration is available via Gesell’s bookstore or email office@gesellinstitute.org.

Certificates of completion are provided for participants who attend all three days of the workshop.  Click here to find out more about CEUs/Graduate Credit.

The Gesell Developmental Observation-Revised for the 6-9-Year-Old Child

In this 3-day workshop, participants learn to administer the Gesell Developmental Observation (GDO-R) to the 6- to 9-year-old child and interpret results as they relate to fine motor, language, cognitive, visual discrimination, right and left orientation, and indicators of possible learning exceptions.

The 2 ½ to 6-Year-Old Child workshop is recommended as a precursor to this workshop, but it is not a pre-requisite for this course.

A typical workshop day runs from 8:30 AM- 4:00 PM.  Highlights of the first day include a comprehensive overview of developmental age and its implications for learning; an in-depth look at developmental behaviors of the 6- to 9-year-old child; and a live demonstration of the GDO-R.  Day two includes additional hands-on practice through role-play; a second live demonstration; and continued practice and discussion.  Day three focuses on the scoring and interpretation of the GDO-R; as well as a third live demonstration of the GDO-R with a child.

Certificates of completion are provided for participants who attend the all three days of the workshop. Find out more about CEUs/Graduate Credit.

The fee for this course is $549.  Participants who have taken the 6-9-year-old workshop within the last five years may take this course as a refresher or review course for $415.
